Hilary Duff Says She Weighed 98 Pounds as a Teen, Struggled with Weight, Body Image and Food

Hilary Duff graces the cover of Health magazine and opens up about her struggles with weight and body image, revealing that as a 17-year-old she weighed 98 pounds. She also spoke out about pressures she felt about her body and weight after giving birth.

Hilary Duff appears in the new TV Land series and ‘Younger’ has been in the news in recent months for the split with her husband the former NHL star Mike Comrie as well as for her comeback as a pop music star, having released a new single of late, ‘Breathing Room.’

Now in gracing the cover of Health magazine she shared with notable candor the struggles she has had with body image that go back to her teen years, and the deleterious effects they had upon her.

She said of her struggle, “When I was 17, I weighed, like, 98 pounds. I was totally obsessed with everything I put in my mouth. I was way too skinny. Not cute. And my body wasn’t that healthy – my hands would cramp up a lot because I wasn’t getting the nutrition I needed.”

She went on to say, “That constant pressure of wanting something different than I had? I regret that. I feel like there was way too much time spent thinking about that.”

Now years later, at age 27, Hilary Duff reveals that being in the public eye has — sadly, predictably — had challenges as she has faced pressures over her weight, particularly after giving birth to her son in 2012. She said, “‘Oh my God, everyone was so hard on me because it took me a year and a half to get my body back!”

She talked about the daily struggle of having to be in public and not having an “acceptable” post-baby body. She said, “The second I had Luca, I went to go get my hair blown out at the salon, and I hadn’t stepped outside in, like, 15 days.”

She continued, saying, “I was learning how to be a new mom, and I needed to go get my hair done. Then they’re like, ‘Hilary Debuts Her Post-Baby Body! I was like, I’m not debuting sh-t right now. I’m just going on an errand run! There is way too much pressure on women these days. It took me a whole 10 months to build a baby.”

She also spoke about how she has been coming to terms with her body and her weight. She said, ” ‘This is the body that I have. I have a very athletic build, and I am so proud of what my body has done for me. I had the best, healthiest, strongest pregnancy. And I feel good about myself. But I feel like I’m always in a five-pound battle, because being 5ft2in, everything is going to show on me!’

Hilary Duff also opened up about her relationship with her estranged husband Mike Comrie. So far as the public has seen, the couple has had an amicable split and there has been no tabloid drama, real, exaggerated or fabricated. She said of the relationship, “‘We have a two-year-old together. We love each other.” Se went on to suggest that the split might not be a permanent one, as she added, “We really are just trying to figure out how we are the most happy – whether together or apart – and we’re doing it as lovingly as possible.

And, as with getting the post-baby body, trying to navigate the complexity of marriage that is ending — or not perhaps — in the public eye we can imagine is all the more challenging. But Duff has graciously offered the comments on a deeply personal topic which the celebrity-watching public clamors for.
