Here’s the first teaser trailer for Ron Howard’s ‘In the Heart of the Sea.’ Chris Hemsworth has the starring role in Ron this highly anticipated historical movie is set in the 1800s, chronicling the real-life story of the men on board the whale ship ‘Essex’ and the inspiration for Herman Melville’s ‘Moby Dick.’
The movie is based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s book, In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. The big screen adaptation of this remarkable and terrifying account, published in 2000 — and winner of the National Book Award for nonfiction that year — seems long overdue in retrospect. With high drama and danger on the high seas it’s begged for Hollywood treatment and now, at last, the begging is over. For movie goers, the waiting is over.
In short, the story unfolds in 1920 and sees the Essex left crippled in the South Pacific when it is attacked by a sperm whale. Seeking revenge for the relentless murders of its fellow whales? Given the high intelligence of the species perhaps. But nonetheless, the attack left many dead, and the 21 survivors adrift in whaleboats and at the mercy and the ravages of the elements for months.
With none other than Ron Howard at the helm, the new movie aims to bring that story to life. Chris Hemsworth is reunited with the director whom he worked with in ‘Rush.’ This time he’s among those survivors in a life-or-death struggle to reach South America, or die in the effort. The movie costars Cillian Murphy, Ben Whishaw, Benjamin Walker and Charlotte Riley among others.
From the looks of the teaser trailer — which runs about two minutes, mercifully longer than many teasers — the intense isolation and terror of being alone at sea is palpably felt.
Oscar buzz? With an historical setting and tense drama, no doubt, but such nominations will be a ways off as the movie does not open in theaters until March 2015. But in the meantime, the teaser trailer is below!
