Keanu Reeves Talks ‘John Wick,’ Life after ‘The Matrix,’ Lack of Film Offers and More

Keanu Reeves’ role in ‘The Matrix’ made him a Hollywood star. Now 15 years later he opens up about his current action movie, ‘John Wick’ and also speaks about the how film offers are drying up for him, and what life has been like for him as he continues his movie career.

He rose to fame with the iconic science fiction movie franchise and now Keanau Reeves is the star of another action movie, ‘John Wick,’ this one recognizably our own world.

In a new interview with Indiewire, the now 50-year-old actor speaks out about life in this world and what it has been like for him in the 15 years since he blazed the screen in ‘The Matrix’ which gave us the concept of taking the blue pill…or not.

He acknowledged it has a while since a major movie has come his way. He said, “The last studio movie I did was “47 Ronin,” but before that it had been a long time — probably “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” So I haven’t been getting many offers from the studios.”

The former was released in 2013 and the later, a few years earlier, 2008. Asked if he was okay with that, he said, quite candidly, “No, it sucks, but it’s just the way it is. You can have positive and negative experiences, but what I like about studios are the resources and the worlds that they can create.”

He went on to elaborate about studio movies versus independent films saying, “Even when I was working on studio movies more often, I was always doing independent movies. So for me, that was just not happening, but I want to keep going, making things, and telling stories. I want to be able to do that — to be an actor, a director, to produce, you know? If we’re going to do a delineation between studio and independent [films], I was always hoping to do both.”

He also spoke about his current movie, ‘John Wick’ in which he portrays a retired hitman who, in typical Hollywood fashion, does not remain in retirement; he goes on a vendetta after his car is stolen and his dog is killed.

Asked about its uniqueness, Reeves said, “It’s the world they’ve created and the vision of the story. The shooting style: the colors, the way they shoot the action. They’re doing wide shots, not a lot of cuts. They’re wanting the action to unfold in front of you as opposed to changing perspectives. That feels different — it’s a little more intimate and objective. It’s not just visceral action. You can believe what you’re seeing and it’s not just sound and fury. You can see the fluidity and what they’re doing — like that one hall shot where they’re wrestling, and he just comes through and pounds a knife into the other guy’s chest. There’s no cut.”

See for yourself, the ever-handsome actor who belies the stereotype of what 50 looks like. It’s truly a case of 50 is the new 30.
