Tupac Shakur has always been a game changer. He broke down a lot of barriers through his poetic rhymes while he was still alive, and even from the grave, he continues to transform rap music. The latest news concerning the rapper is that there’s a music in the works that is inspired by his music, and get this, it’s headed to a Broadway stage.
According to Billboard, a workshop of Holler If Ya Hear Me is currently under way in New York to be helmed by Kenny Leon, director of the Broadway hits Fences and The Mountaintop. Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur, is on board as producer, Todd Kreidler (Fences) wrote the book which the musical will be based upon, and choreography will be handled by Tony winner Wayne Cilento (Wicked, Sweet Charity).
Holler If Ya Hear Me will tell an original story about two childhood friends in a fictional Midwestern industrial city as they struggle to meet their dreams in the face of tough circumstances.
The new musical sets Shakur’s music to the original story and hopes to be ready for the 2013-2014 Broadway season.
Though the initial reaction to this kind of news may be confusion, perhaps shock, it actually makes a lot of sense. Tupac was known for his gangster ways, yes, but he was also an avid reader and had great love for the works of William Shakespeare.
The rapper was killed in September 1996 at the age 25.
What do you think? Would you go watch gangsta rap on Broadway?
