You’ve got to hand it to the Rolling Stones—for a band of guys who are all past retirement age, and who have been in the same band for 50 years, they’ve got a hell of a lot of energy (maybe it was all the dollar signs generated from ticket sales that kept ‘em going), as the band played a 23-song, two and a half hour 50th anniversary set this weekend in London’s O2 Arena.
That’s right—two and a half hours. Did we mention that the youngest full member of the band (bassist Ronnie Wood) is 65 years old? These boys have some stamina.
The concert ran the gamut from greatest hits (“Gimme Shelter,” “Start Me Up,” “It’s Only Rock ‘N Roll,” etc) to deep cuts (“All Down The Line, “Midnight Rambler,” “Before They Make Me Run”) and new tunes like the jittery new single “Doom and Gloom” (or, as Mick Jagger pronounces it, “Dayooom and Gahhhluuuuuummmme”).
So, how was the show? All reports and YouTube clips seem to indicate it was a relatively stripped and bare-bones affair for the Stones, focusing more on the songs than excessive stage theatrics. Curious how it sounded? Check out this clip of “Honky Tonk Women,” and then pour over the setlist below.
