It’s been a long, long time since My Bloody Valentine‘s last record. 21 years to be exact. But, that long-awaited follow-up to 1991′s Loveless might be released by the end of this year, according to the band’s frontman Kevin Shields.
Shields’ told NME that he promises a new album from the band by the year’s end, with an EP to follow. He also said that fans of Loveless will not be disappointed by the new material.
“I think with this record, people who like us will immediately connect with something. Based on the very, very few people who’ve heard stuff – some engineers, the band, and that’s about it – some people think it’s stranger than Loveless. I don’t. I feel like it really frees us up, and in the bigger picture it’s 100 percent necessary.”
According to The Guardian, Shields’ also said that they’re halfway done with mixing and that the band will play some of the new material during their shows in Japan early next year. The band will headline the Tokyo Rocks festival at Ajinomoto Stadium in Tokyo in early May.
The new album is based on music Shields recorded in 1996. He described his recordings as a “conceptual thing” because the songs weren’t written in a “linear fashion.” As of yet, there is still no album title or artwork.
Shields also mentioned that while he is expecting some trouble with the new record, he doesn’t really care because he knows the album will mean a lot to a “significant amount of people” like the band’s fans. We just hope this new record is for real, and not a just Shields teasing us.
In May, My Bloody Valentine put out re-issues of remastered versions of Isn’t Anything and Loveless.
What do you think? Are you excited for a new Bloody Valentine record?
