Kony 2012 Campaign Catches Eyes Of Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga

Campaign aims to bring African militia leader Joseph Kony to justice for war crimes and for enlisting children as soldiers.

<P>A campaign to stop the nearly 30-year, brutal rule of African militia leader Joseph Kony became a viral sensation this week. <a href="http://kony2012.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com" target="_blank">"Kony 2012,"</a> started by the group Invisible Children, aims to make Kony's face so famous that authorities will finally be able to arrest him and try him for his crimes. </P><P> </P><P>A 30-minute <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc" target="_blank">documentary</a> released on Monday is one of the keys to the campaign, and as of Thursday it had gotten more than 26 million views. The video details the atrocities carried out by Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army. The campaign appears to be working, as at one point on Wednesday, Invisible Children and #stopkony were trending higher on Twitter than Peyton Manning or the new iPad. </P><P> </P><P>Since 1987, human rights officials say Kony has forcefully abducted more than 60,000 children to be soldiers in his army and reportedly raped, mutilated and killed civilians in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan and displaced more than 2 million people. The leader is wanted for committing atrocities by the International Criminal Court and is being hunted down by 100 U.S. Special Forces advisers and local troops in four Central African nations, according to the <a href="http://bit.ly/AyrDyz"><I>Associated Press.</I></a> </P><P> </P><P>Kony 2012 is an effort to capture Kony and disarm the LRA before a reported window of opportunity closes. One way it plans to do that is by encouraging users to directly message a variety of stars to make use of their Twitter ubiquity to get the word out. Jessica opened up to the magazine about the challenges of dealing with Hollywood and how she’s managing now as a veteran in the industry. Jessica got honest with Maxim about the reality of Hollywood (via USA Today).

On how she felt in her twenties as an actress: “I was figuring (stuff) out. I wasn’t totally happy. I wasn’t sure how to be. I was also really hungry, but so much of this business is fickle and such a crapshoot. You hope and pray that it all works out, and so little of it does. It chews you up and spits you out; it spits out a lot of people.”

On dealing with her own personal issues: “I definitely feel like I tackled something and came out the other side. Everything that led up to all of this was worth it. I’m really comfortable in my own skin, and I’m not apologizing for myself.”

On how things have changed from her last Maxim shoot: “Since my last Maxim shoot, I’m very different; I’m now in my 30s, I have two kids, I have a company. I feel very confident and happy and really content with where life is right now.”

On being a business owner: “Being a business owner has been really cool. I never knew I would speak at so many business and technology conferences in my life. There are a lot of dudes there, we’ve got to get more women in technology.”

What she likes in a man: “I like a man who is chivalrous. Boys, good manners go a long way.”

Jessica sounds so grounded! She’s come a long way, hasn’t she?

In accepting the award, Meron said the pair, who were also behind the Oscar-winning movie musical "Chicago" and "Hairspray," have spent a long time trying to "fight, persuade and manipulate" Hollywood into including LGB characters in their work. </P><P> </P><P>Also on hand was openly gay 17-year-old high school student Katy Butler, who received a special award from Weinstein Company co-chairman Harvey Weinstein for her work in launching a Change.org campaign last month to argue for a <a href="http://act.mtv.com/posts/bully-needs-more-sigs-so-join-justin-bieber-demi-lovato-ellen-more-in-the-rating-fight/"_blank">PG-13 rating</a> for the upcoming documentary, "Bully." </P><P> </P><P>Other winners included: "Dancing With the Stars" (Outstanding Reality Program), for including the story line of transgender dancer Chaz Bono last season, the HBO film "Cinema Verite" (Outstanding TV Movie or Mini Series), a film focused on the life of a black lesbian teenager, "Pariah" (Outstanding Film -- Limited Release), "Battle Against Bullying" from ABC World News with Diane Sawyer (Outstanding TV Journalism Segment) and the "Batwoman" comic book by J.H. YouTube Threatening To Block Radiohead, Adele And Jack White Music Videos

YouTube won’t stand for any kind of resistance. The site, which recently announced that it will launch its own paid streaming music service, is threatening various record labels by saying it will remove videos affiliated with these groups. Artists involved in this dispute include Radiohead, Adele, Jack White, Arctic Monkeys and Vampire Weekend.

According to Financial Times (via COS), YouTube could remove the videos in question “in a matter of days.” However, Rolling Stone states that this is only a negotiating tactic to get the labels to sign Youtube’s “highly unfavorable [licensing] terms.” However, a rep for YouTube did confirm that the site is willing to block content from unsigned labels in certain countries.

Groups representing these indie labels have appealed to the European Commission to prevent YouTube’s wrath. Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien, who co-chairs the Featured Artists Coalition, is clearly upset about YouTube’s bullying strategies and said that the site is “creating an internet just for the superstars and big businesses”. Billy Bragg, also a vocal proponent for indies, told Music Week:

“YouTube are shooting themselves in the foot with their attempt to strong-arm independent labels into signing up to such low rates. They’re in danger of launching a streaming service that lacks the innovative and cutting edge sounds that independent artists bring.”

A decade into her career, the pop megastar reinvented herself this year as the ultimate Femme Fatale and made a big commitment to Jason Trawick.

Jack White Releases 'Lazaretto' Music Video

Jack White is a golden god and he’s not afraid to show it in the music video for his latest single “Lazaretto.” The black-and-white clip shows shattered glass, a car doing donuts against a pale floor, and a disco ball smashing into a wall in slow-motion. It’s chaotic, just like the song. Check it out.

The clip begins as White readies to play the song. And he’s not alone, his band is rocking out with him. There’s static, shattered glass flying everywhere, and some slimy spit. White gets a little symbolic too by showing raging bulls and snakes in the clip. Here it is:

White’s new solo album, Lazaretto, comes out in a few days (June 10th) through Columbia and his own label, Third Man Records. A seven-inch vinyl single of “Lazaretto” is now available for pre-order. The full Lazaretto LP is currently streaming on iTunes in its entirety; it’s available for pre-order on both ULTRA LP vinyl and CD.
